Brave Scouts Honoured
The following text is from the South Wales Echo dated Feb 17th:
FOUR brave Cardiff scouts have been honoured for saving their friend's life when he plunged more than 300ftdown a rocky cliff.
Last August, Adam, 15, slipped and fell down a mountainside in the Lake district, landing unconscious in a stream below.
His friend Ian, 14, quickly made his way down the side of the cliff with his first aid box, followed by Huw, 15,
Daniel, 14, and David, 15, used their mobile phones to call the Mountain Rescue Team. Adam was pulled to safety by the Mountain Rescue Team and airlifted to hospital.
He had a fractured skull but has made a full recovery since the accident, which happened after the five teenagers took a wrong turn during a 30 mile expedition.
The scouts, all from Rhiwbina, were rewarded for their bravery at a special ceremony at the Lord Mayor's Mansion House, in Richmond Road, Cardiff.
Lord Mayor Russell Goodway said: "These four young people all displayed courage beyond their years and there is no doubt that their training, along with their courage, prevented a tragedy.
Too often, young people are criticised. We only ever hear of the bad examples. But these Scouts have achieved something which must humble us all. It is right that the City of Cardiff should salute such a feat."
Keith Burfoot, Area Commissioner, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Scouts, said: "They worked as a team and used thier training. That is why the rescue was a success. If it was not for their wuick thinking and the fact that each member took responsibility for their part in the rescue I am certain that Adam would not be with us now."
Adam said: "I am obviouly extremely gratefull or what they did. I have no memory of the event, but from what I have heard since, I was very lucky they were there."
All four heroes, who recieved The Scout Association's Gilt Cross for their courage, said they were extremely proud of their achievement.
Ian added: "It all happened so fast. We just did what we had been trained to do without thinking about it. Thankfully it all ended happily and Adam has made a full recovery."
