The Venture Scout Membership Badge
Membership Badge | Venture Scout Award | Queens Scout Award | D of E Award
All new members of the Unit complete this badge before they are invested. Scouts may work towards this badge during the three months prior to transferring from the Scout Troop or when they first join the Unit. The Award has three requirements:
Action - take part in a sufficient number of activities with the Unit to ensure that you are aware of the responsibilities and implications of Membership. Scouts who have worked on the Explorer or Chief Scout's Awards and who have been associated with Venture Scouts in obtaining parts of these Awards may qualify for this section as determined by the Unit Executive Committee.
Understanding - show that you understand and support the Aim and international aspects of the Scout Movement and that you know how your Unit is managed and what is expected of you as a Venture Scout.
Commitment - know, understand and accept the Scout Promise and Law.
How do I do it?
The Venture Scout Membership Badge is all about helping you to:
learn something about the fundamentals of Scouting;
understand how your Venture Scout Unit works and runs;
become involved with the life of the unit;
know and understand the Scout Promise and Law.
Whether you are new to Venture Scouting or coming up from the Troop, the Venture Scout Membership Badge is meant to provide you with an introduction to Venture Scouting and the opportunity to become an accepted and valued Member of the Unit.
This is done simply through participation in a number of Unit activities, using every opertunity to observe, listen and ask questions. Find out who are the members of the Unit Executive Commitee. What are their specific roles? Who decided on this particular activity and why? Ask your Leaders or Unit Executive Comittee Members what they expect of you as a Venture Scout.
Think about the Scout Promise and LAw. Do they contain anything contrary to your present views? Are they worth trying to live up to? If you find the Promise and Law challenging, then you may find the booklet 'What's all this about, God?' well worth reading.
When you have some answers to your questions, a Member of the Unit will discuss with you how well things have gone, what you have learned from these early experiences of Venture Scouting and whether you have enjoyed yourself. This discussion may be very informal and could take place just about anywhere. it may be in the back of the minibus on the way home from an activity or it may be in a quiet few minutes at the end of a Unit meeting.
Remember, your own interests and hobbies are important, especially for planning future programmes and activities, so make your views known.
Finally, the presentation of the Badge will be arranged by your Unit Executive Committee in consultation with your Venture Scout Leader.
